The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers

We are Chapter 11 of SMPTE, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers; a student chapter that supports the Broadcast Engineering program at Napa Valley College. The Broadcast Engineering program, formerly Telecommunications program, has been in operation at Napa Valley College since 1971. This program teaches television video and audio technologies in order to prepare students for certification as Broadcast Technologists certified by the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE).

In the past, the program concentrated on the details of the NTSC system, the analog television system primarily in operation in the United States; analog tape formats; composite video and analog audio formats. The federally mandated switch to the ATSC system required that the program change its focus to include digital broadcast technologies. The Broadcast Engineering program now teaches MPEG-2, MPEG-4, 8-VSB and COFDM broadcast standards; SDI video and AES audio formats; and digital storage technologies such as video servers and automation systems. The digital systems have a greater reliance on computer technology, therefore the program now includes a greater focus on information technology and networking.
